Here's a nice little Wired News story celebrating the 40th anniversary of Jamaica's Trojan Records. Scott Thill, the author, contends that remixing, mashups and other ground-breaking forms of musical expression were all created in Jamaica, flourishing in a perfect combination of liberal copyright rules, broad access to British and US source material, and a culture of music.

"There's never really been any stigma associated with sharing or using the works of others," says British musician, journalist and Trojan producer Laurence Cane-Honeysett. "If anything, to most it's regarded as a compliment."

This sharing-friendly approach was carried further by visionary Jamaican producers like King Tubby and Prince Jammy, who, in the early 1970s, started releasing versions of the day's most popular songs with the vocals removed. Using primitive, sometimes handmade equipment, they would drench the instrumental backing track in reverb and echo, then add sound effects to build a throbbing, psychedelic stew.

It was here the remix was born -- the Jamaicans simply call it "dub."

One of yesterday's headlines asked Slate readers, "If You Like 300, Are You Gay?" Judging from the first page of Matt Feeney's article, one could fairly wonder why 300 was used to spotlight a piece focused on surf movies. But, the "meat" of the argument—as it were—is indeed dangling on the final page: "Shouldn't [straight men] be able to [project onto [heroic figures they themselves would like to be]] not just excellence but physical beauty] without being called gay?" According to Feeney, envy of heroic narcissism—the admiring of one's own reflection in another's excellence—is unfairly characterized as "homoeroticism." Judging from responses in the Fray, this assertion is more provocative than it is persuasive.

As a (very) white American, I've always had the nagging the suspicion that white support for integration has more to do with assuaging the conscience of white Americans than with the manifest injustices regularly visited upon black Americans. At a minimum, assigning black children to minority status in schools stocked with the racist white children of racist white parents seems a dubious favor. Is compulsory integration good for black Americans?

Through translators he described some of his companies’ assets, which include at least 49 pornography sites, a pornographic film production company, nine restaurants in Japan and private planes, Mr. Becker said.
“I don’t think I discovered everything, but I learned more than enough to be able to say with certainty that they are not leaders in the video-conferencing business,” Mr. Becker said. “They are leaders in pushing porn via a Flash player and streaming porn from the United States to Japan.”

The term white trash dates back not to the 1950s but to the 1820s. It arises not in Mississippi or Alabama, but in and around Baltimore, Maryland. And best guess is that it was invented not by whites, but by African Americans. As a term of abuse, white trash was used by blacks—both free and enslaved—to disparage local poor whites. Some of these poor whites would have been newly arrived Irish immigrants, others semiskilled workers drawn to Baltimore and Washington, D.C. in the postrevolutionary building boom, and others still may have been white servants, waged or indentured, working in the homes and estates of area elites. The term registered contempt and disgust, as it does today, and suggests sharp hostilities between social groups who were essentially competing for the same resources—the same jobs, the same opportunities, and even the same marriage partners.

Much of African American culture is about dealing with the legacy of that and attempts to recover, what people do not see it if you are still dealing with the trauma of an assault you are still a victim. You can smell the slavery on them still, the brokenness, the victimhood. There are fools among them who see the slavery as a badge of honor, as if their weakling ancestors should be congratulated or pitied or somehow deserved compensation. The problem is that to any person with anything even approaching self-respect, a history of weakness is something to be ashamed of. I cannot lose sight of the fact that these people allowed themselves to be subjugated, held down, and that these genetic qualities are still present. Rebels do not survive, slinking, grinning, sneaky, hypocritical, shuck-jive yes-men do.

It takes a lot of complacency and fear to remain a slave. An absence of courage, organization, logic, willingness to fight for long-term gain, in short, the same things that keep prisoners everywhere prisoners. It’s human, the herd mentality combined with mass hysteria, and there is no reason to believe that it’s race-specific, and since the African experience in America is unique, there is no control that would disprove it’s uniqueness.

It’s simple, and simple things, being simple, are easier for stupid people to understand. Pick any country song in the entire repertoire of country somgs since the origin of the art form, and an 8 year-old can easily grasp everything the song has to say. It’s music written for people who don’t know much about life or about music. That said, it’s possible for even a nursery rhyme to have a catchy tune. Catchiness or singability do not good music make, though.

Last weekend Jeff Foxworthy included a little spiel about why he loves country music into his CMT Award-show schtick. Supposed country music is about the important things, God,country, love, broken hearts, family, cheating etc., and that’s why he loves it. He said that it is not about violent thuggishness, or taking political sides (a little swipe at the Dixie Chicks and Hip-hop there). Foxworthy made his money entertaining retards with humor that is the very opposite of edgy or enlightening. His humor, the patented, repetitive routine, like that of Carrot-top, Pauly Shore or Gallagher, marks is fans as those of lesser intelligence. They like him because one joke is the same as the next, no variation means no thought, no need to try to understand, you can laugh on cue. Simple, unoriginal humor for simple unoriginal people.

Ron White, in an interview said that Foxworthy was better than Pryor or Cosby since his album sales have been greater than both Pryor’s and Cosby’s combined. Ron White is a brown-nosing hanger-on with an equally limited set of jokes that he repeats endlessly. Note that the humor of the aforementioned black comedians was more complex, full of nuance and depending on actual life-experience. A certain amount of sophistication is needed to appreciate Pryor/Cosby comedy, especially for white people who need to be familiar with speech and lifestyle that differs from their own. I find nothing even remotely cute or attractive about the Geico lizard. I think it is kind of an asshole, in fact, in the sense that cockney speakers tend, to a great extent, to be assholes. I find it repulsive, smug, and too cartoonish to be intended for adults outside of their test-group, which was probably made up of weed-smokers. I also think the caveman thing might be slightly racist as well but I have think about it some more. I have a hard time believing that anybody would choose Geico for any reason other than they are "on TV a lot" and "seem to be doing well for themselves". In other words, anybody in their right mind would have a problem with Geico for exactly that reason. I don't want my insurance company rich, I want them fucking pauperized and operating out of a trailer that I have to drive by 15 rebel flags to get to. I want them broke and vulnerable and afraid of me, like my women. They need to know that they have to put out. What the fuck does a lizard have to do with insurance?

So I was watching that Diane sawyer piece on Bob Woodward this morning and it occurred to me (unlike the rest of you, apparently) that this is not journalism. This is one white preppy journalist, empathizing with, attempting to evoke empathy for, another white preppy journalist. Probably because she can't feel real empathy for the working-class soldiers coming home disfigured and disabled. Is Mr Colgate-educated Woodward getting his ass blown up and lobotomized supposed to be more significant to me than say an ordinary soldier? How about the camera man (camera-men are usually not Ivy Leaguers) who also got his ass blown up? There was the whole irrelevant nonsense about how Woodward proposed to his wife after a mountain-climbing trip. Who gives a fuck? If he is dumb enough to take unnecessary risks for the sake of an adrenaline rush, he probably deserved a closed-casket funeral.

The whole segment was directed at the rich folk who believe that any kind of real job (like journalism, for instance) is really an act of charity for the rest of us. Look at what Bob has sacrificed for the poor!

Back to Arafat. The world needs its bad guys, it needs them with faces that we have pictures and video images of, with ugly-ass ethnic faces, preferably. It needs them with non-Christian religions, and in uniforms that don't look a lot like ours. It needs them to speak in languages that are difficult for native English-speakers to learn, and to do stupid shit like burn effigies or have their followers do them. They also have to relatively far away from anybody civilized, that way they can be scary without actually causing panic among god-fearing white people. Yup, that Hitler guy kind of screwed things up for the supervillain club. Everything changed because of him.
